The tenth position denotes the vehicle’s model year, following a specific alphanumeric sequence starting with A for 1980 and incrementing thereafter.

Locating Your Vehicle’s VIN Number

If you need to manually locate a VIN, here are the primary locations to check on a vehicle:

  1. Dashboard (Driver’s Side Windshield): From outside the vehicle, look at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side. A small metal plate with the VIN and possibly a barcode should be visible on the dashboard through the glass.

  2. Driver’s Side Door Post: Open the driver’s side door and examine the door post. The VIN is often located here, usually near a sticker indicating tire pressure and weight specifications.

  3. Driver’s Side Door Edge: In some vehicles, the VIN may be located on the door itself, near the door latch.

  4. Insurance Card or Vehicle Title: If you cannot find the VIN on the vehicle itself, check your insurance documents or vehicle title, as the VIN is always recorded on these documents.
