DEXA Scan at Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care: Your Bone Density Experts

Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because bone loss can occur without any symptoms. Over time, this can lead to bones becoming fragile and more prone to fractures. Factors such as aging, hormonal changes, insufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D, family history of osteoporosis, and certain medications can increase your risk. Many individuals may have osteoporosis or be at risk of developing it without even realizing it.

Early detection is key to managing osteoporosis and minimizing the risk of serious complications. Bone density testing, specifically a DEXA scan, is a safe, rapid, non-invasive, and painless procedure that can detect osteoporosis in its earliest, most treatable stages.

The Osteoporosis Center, conveniently located within the RWJBarnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center at 200 South Orange Ave., Livingston, NJ, is a leading facility in New Jersey for the advanced diagnosis of osteoporosis. We conduct over 9,500 bone density tests annually, making us a center of excellence for bone health.

Our center is equipped with two state-of-the-art DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) scanners. DEXA technology is recognized as the gold standard in bone densitometry due to its exceptional accuracy, minimal radiation exposure, and ability to measure bone density in both the hip and spine. A DEXA scan is a quick and easy test that plays a crucial role in diagnosing osteoporosis. Furthermore, these scans are essential for monitoring the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments and identifying skeletal damage caused by other medical conditions or medications.

Our dedicated technologists are not only X-ray certified but also hold specialized certifications in bone densitometry from the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). Beyond DEXA scans, we also offer Vertebral Fracture Assessments (VFA) and Body Composition Assessments to provide a comprehensive evaluation of your bone health.

Following your DEXA scan at Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care, you will receive a comprehensive report prepared by our affiliated endocrinologists. These physicians are recognized clinical experts in osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment. Your report will include a detailed review of your medical history, treatment recommendations, and a clear interpretation of your scan results.

The most reliable way to determine your bone strength and definitively know if you have osteoporosis is through a DEXA scan. To schedule your DEXA scan at the RWJBarnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, please contact us at 973-322-7888.

To expedite your registration process, you may wish to complete our Bone Densitometry Questionnaire in advance, available at Bone Densitometry Questionnaire. Please remember to avoid taking any vitamins or calcium supplements for 24 hours prior to your scan. For the most accurate comparison over time, it is also recommended to have your scans performed on the same DEXA machine each year.
