Easy Online Scanning Workflow with AvePDF
Enhance Your Website and Help Users with PDF Tools
Did You Know?
Every scanning workflow should incorporate a cleanup phase. Optimizing scanned documents is crucial for more than just readability and visual appeal. Cleaning scanned documents offers several benefits. Any detection engine, such as OCR, will yield better results with clearer documents. This also applies to barcode recognition, checkboxes in exam forms, specific fonts in tick marks, and other elements. Furthermore, cleaned documents achieve better compression ratios. Tools like hyper-compression ensure the best quality-to-readability ratio for your PDFs and can sometimes even enhance the readability of scanned documents, thanks to numerous optimization algorithms. Once your document is cleaned, you can compress and convert it to PDF/A for long-term archiving and preservation. Future users of your documents will appreciate this!
Scanned documents can be noisy. Frequently, scanned documents contain unwanted, randomly scattered artifacts known as “noise.” In imaging, we even have “salt and pepper noise,” which refers to bright pixels in darker areas and dark pixels in brighter image areas, resembling salt and pepper sprinkled on the document—imaging likes metaphors. Numerous filters exist to remove noise from scanned documents. The Despeckle filter removes noise from images without blurring edges. It intelligently detects complex areas and leaves them intact while smoothing areas where noise is apparent. Despeckle effectively cleans dirty or faded images showing spots or speckles after scanning. The Median Filter reduces noise in a layer by merging pixel brightness within a selection using an algorithm. This filter identifies pixels with similar brightness, discards pixels that differ significantly from adjacent ones, and replaces the central pixel with the median brightness value of the searched pixels. This helps eliminate or reduce motion artifacts in images or unwanted patterns that may appear in scanned images. Median filtering particularly improves OCR results because it removes noise while preserving edges.
Many methods exist to enhance your scanned documents. Skew is an artifact that can occur during document scanning, where text/images are slightly rotated. Often, this happens when paper is misaligned in the scanner. Autodeskew is the process of detecting and correcting this issue in scanned files, ensuring that deskewed images have properly aligned text/images. This filter improves character recognition accuracy because aligned text closely resembles what OCR software expects during image analysis. Brightness and contrast adjustments are well-known and crucial for scanned documents as they significantly improve readability. Gamma correction is often overlooked, but adjusting gamma settings on overly bright images can make them readable without darkening them. The goal is to optimize contrast and brightness in midtones while preserving black and white elements. A crop tool is useful when you need to remove unwanted page areas. And if you need to remove black borders and punch holes, our cleanup widget handles it for you!
