Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) stands as a verified adult burn center, recognized by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma for its excellence in burn care. Our Burn Center is home to a highly skilled burn care team adept at managing severe burns and smoke inhalation injuries. From the moment patients arrive until their discharge, our dedicated burn surgeons are actively involved in their resuscitation and comprehensive wound care.
Advanced Treatments and Innovative Approaches
Within our specialized Trauma and Burn Intensive Care Unit (TBICU), patient rooms are thoughtfully designed and equipped with high-output ceiling heaters, which are critical for maintaining optimal body temperature and promoting healing in burn patients. Furthermore, our TBICU is conveniently located near a neurological ICU that features an on-site CT scan. This immediate access to advanced scanning technology directly within the unit is invaluable for our trauma and burn patients, enabling rapid diagnosis and informed treatment planning. This capability ensures timely and precise care, especially when dealing with complex burn injuries that may require detailed internal assessments.
Our commitment to innovation is deeply rooted in our history. Members of our burn care team were present during the groundbreaking discovery of artificial skin (Integra™) in the laboratory. Basic research focused on expanding the applications of artificial skin remains a significant area of active investigation within our facilities. BWH played a pivotal role in the initial clinical trials for Trancyte ™, a treatment utilized for patients suffering from facial and hand burns. Our pioneering contributions extend to the innovative use of anabolic steroids in burn patient care, further demonstrating our dedication to advancing burn treatment methodologies and improving patient outcomes. Community Outreach and Burn Prevention Education
Recognizing the profound impact of fire prevention on public health, we actively engage in community outreach programs focused on reducing burn incidents. Nationally, diligent fire prevention efforts have significantly contributed to a steady decline in the number of burn victims over the last decade, highlighting the effectiveness of proactive education and safety measures.
Our Burn Center team is experienced in delivering comprehensive educational initiatives, including both informative lectures and practical, hands-on courses. Our community outreach is centered on two key pillars: ensuring proper and effective care for burn patients and promoting proactive burn prevention methods within our communities. We invite you to contact the BWH Trauma and Burn Center via email to request a presentation tailored to your local community needs or to learn more about any of the following topics:
