Easy Online Scanning Workflow with AvePDF
Improve Your Website and Help Users with PDF Tools
Did You Know?
Every scanning workflow should include a cleanup phase. Optimizing scanned documents is crucial for more than just improved readability and visual appeal. There are significant benefits to cleaning up scanned documents. Any detection engine, such as OCR, will yield better results with clear documents. This also applies to recognizing barcodes, checkboxes in exam forms, specific fonts in tick marks, and other elements.
Furthermore, you achieve better compression ratios with cleaned documents. Tools like hyper-compression ensure the best quality-to-readability ratio for your PDFs and can sometimes even enhance the readability of scanned documents thanks to various optimization algorithms. Once your document is cleaned, you can compress and convert it to PDF/A for long-term archiving and preservation. People who will use your documents in the future will appreciate this effort!
Scanned Documents Can Be Noisy
Scanned documents frequently contain unwanted, randomly scattered artifacts known as “noise.” In imaging, we even have “salt and pepper noise,” which refers to bright pixels in darker areas and dark pixels in brighter image areas, as if salt and pepper particles were sprinkled on the document (imaging likes metaphors).
Many filters are available to remove noise from scanned documents. The Despeckle filter eliminates noise from images without blurring edges. It intelligently detects complex areas and leaves them untouched while smoothing out areas where noise is likely to be visible. Despeckle can clean up dirty or faded images showing spots or speckles after scanning.
The Median Filter reduces noise in a layer by blending pixel brightness within a selection using an algorithm. The filter looks for pixels of similar brightness, discards pixels that differ too much from adjacent pixels, and replaces the center pixel with the median brightness value of the pixels searched. This helps eliminate or reduce motion blur in images or unwanted patterns that may appear in scanned images. Median filtering particularly improves OCR results because it removes noise while preserving edges.
Multiple Ways to Enhance Your Scanned Documents
Skew is an artifact that can occur during the document scanning process, where the document’s text/image is slightly rotated. Often, this happens when the paper is misaligned in the scanner. Autodeskew is the process of detecting and correcting this issue in scanned files, ensuring that the deskewed image has its text/image properly aligned. This filter improves the accuracy of character recognition because aligned text is much closer to what OCR software expects when performing image analysis.
Brightness and contrast adjustments are well-known and crucial image enhancements for scanned documents as they can significantly improve readability. We often overlook gamma correction, but adjusting the gamma setting on a very bright image can make it readable without darkening it. The goal is to optimize contrast and brightness in the midtones while preserving black and white elements.
A crop tool is useful when you need to cut out unwanted areas of a page. And if you need to remove black borders and punch holes, our cleanup widget will handle it for you!
